Section 2 Physical Activity

Active Walkway

For our Active Walkway two 1 kilometre routes were measured. One around the perimeter of both playing fields and the second around the perimeter of the school concrete. The children have been very active undertaking their daily kilometre run as part of the Active Schools ‘Run Around Ireland’ Initiative. We coincided this with our school hall fundraiser ’50k Your Way’ . By achieving 50 kilometres the children will have run from Ardfert N.S. to the summit of Carrauntoohil!
We decided to make our walkway circuit even more active and fun by creating exercise stations at different points along our walkway. Each class decided on an exercise for a station. The stations are: 1. Star Jumps, 2. Squats, 3. Arm Circles, 4. Heel Flicks, 5. Wall Press Ups, 6. High Knees, 7. Super Lunges, 8. Mountain Climbers.

Playground Games and Activities

The children are very active on yard at lunchtime. They love playing with lots of different PE equipment such as Skipping Ropes, Hoola Hoops, Bean Bags and Balls. They have also learned lots of different playground games. This has helped our children increase their daily physical activity and develop their movement skills.

Senior Infants – Ball skills

Triheroes

Over the next three weeks the children in 5th and 6th Classes will take part in the Tri-Heroes programme. This programme will introduce the children to triathlon activities and the concept of transition, which is a very important part of doing a triathlon.

The programme brings together the lifelong activities of swimming, cycling and running to inspire, motivate and challenge children. Tri Heroes is fun, varied, challenging and suitable for all pupils.

At the end of the course each student will get the chance to take part in a duathlon on the school grounds, giving them a sense of accomplishment and allowing them participate in a safe and positive environment. We hope everyone enjoys the programme.
